Abstract

The relationship between memory and history continues to be one of the Gordian knots in the historian's profession. In this debate, organised on the basis of a round table held as part of the II Jornadas Juan José Carreras - Premios de la Asociación de Historia Contemporánea, which took place at the University of Seville in September 2024, Ayer has invited Antonio Míguez Macho, José María Portillo Valdés and Maria Inácia Rezola, three renowned specialists in different fields of contemporary history, to think collectively on the subject. The debate address crucial issues such as the public uses of the past, the place of memory in the historian's profession, the processes of memorialisation and dememorialisation, and the commitment and challenges facing historians in the future. In addition, the speakers delve into the contexts of Spain and Portugal, based on the Spanish laws of historical memory and the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Carnation Revolution. This debate has been coordinated by Steven Forti and Carolina García-Sanz, members of the Editorial Board of Ayer.
